Staying cool: Tips for air conditioner use - Kare11.com
MINNEAPOLIS - The typical household will see their bill go up at least 15 percent or more during the summer. So how do you get the most out of your unit?

We spoke with some technicians who shared their expertise and while some of it may seem like common sense a lot of people don't do it.

Edward Freeman, who works for Residential Heating & Air Conditioning, said first things first make sure your unit is up to date on maintenance. He said 90 percent of service calls are for mechanical failures.

All air conditioners should be serviced every two years and filters should be changed every season. Doing this not only improves efficiency it also extends the life of the unit.

Also, when you know a heat wave is coming, close your windows and start the air conditioner at least 24 hours before the hot weather hits. This keeps the AC from playing the catch up game with the heat in your house. Keep the unit between 70 to 77 degrees. Freeman said most people keep it around 74.

Lastly, you can save money and increase efficiency by raising your home's thermostat temperature from 72 to 78 degrees. Doing so can save you $25 or more each month.
