Hawaiian Electric office to use seawater air conditioning - The Maui Weekly |
|
Hawaiian Electric Company will utilize Honolulu Seawater Air Conditioning's (HSWAC) green cooling alternative in its office building in downtown Honolulu. The project will reduce Hawaiian Electric's carbon footprint by providing an alternative to traditional cooling systems, which rely heavily on potable water and electricity consumption.
The HSWAC system utilizes cold seawater piped in from 1,700 feet below sea level at a site slated for construction off the coast of Kaka'ako. The project will begin in early 2012 and will provide cooling services for a variety of commercial and residential properties in Honolulu.
"This is an excellent use of local resources--in this case, one of Hawai'i's most sustainable natural resources, seawater--to meet our clean energy goals and ensure we have a diverse portfolio of renewable energy sources," said Hawaiian Electric Executive Vice President Robbie Helm.
The completed project is anticipated to reduce water consumption by 260 million gallons, electrical demand by 14 megawatts, sewage by 84 million gallons and reduce carbon monoxide emissions by 84,000 tons annually.
