It may sound silly to think about your air conditioner freezing in the middle of August, right? But that’s exactly the problem for many homeowners here in San Antonio. In fact, it’s one of the most common AC problems we get calls and questions about.
So what exactly happens when your AC freezes up? The first thing you’ll notice is your system isn’t cooling anymore. The problem is with your system’s evaporator coil. The most common reason? If your air filter is super dirty, it blocks the air flow.
That restriction of air causes condensation to freeze on the coil. Another reason we see AC freeze-ups is because of leaks somewhere in your system. If it’s leaking Freon, the system goes into overdrive to get the temperature down to your desired setting. A leak is a major problem – it’s not something that should be solved with a quick fix (i.e. topping off your system with Freon). If you have a leak, it’s going to continue to come back.
So make sure you regularly change your air filter(s). Not only does it keep the air inside your home cleaner and healthier to breathe, it helps prevent costly problems with your AC system!
